Margaret Tobin “Unsinkable Molly” Brown
Despite what you may have heard from spurious sources, Margaret Tobin Brown, the “Unsinkable Molly” of Titanic fame, did not build nor own the Brown Palace. And though she shared a surname with the hotel’s founder, she was no relation to Henry Cordes Brown. She did, however, frequent the Brown Palace on several occasions, including the immediate aftermath of the Titanic disaster, when she held her press conferences here and stayed in a sixth-floor corner suite. One year, the generous Mrs. Brown decorated a small Christmas tree for the Front Desk. A few days before the holiday, she personally handed out small gifts to every doorman, bellman, housekeeper and server. She had, in her own words, “a heart as big as a ham.”
