Margaret Tobin “Unsinkable Molly” Brown

Despite what you may have heard from spurious sources, Margaret Tobin Brown, the “Unsinkable Molly” of Titanic fame, did not build nor own the Brown Palace. And though she shared a surname with the hotel’s founder, she was no relation to Henry Cordes Brown. She did, however, frequent the Brown Palace on several occasions, including the immediate aftermath of the Titanic disaster, when she held her press conferences here and stayed in a sixth-floor corner suite. One year, the generous Mrs. Brown decorated a small Christmas tree for the Front Desk. A few days before the holiday, she personally handed out small gifts to every doorman, bellman, housekeeper and server. She had, in her own words, “a heart as big as a ham.”

Another Year, Another Steer

Slugger & DenverLast Friday, January 24th, The Brown Palace welcomed Slugger and Denver to Afternoon Tea in the Atrium Lobby at the annual prize-winning livestock event. The Brown Palace has a long-standing tradition of welcoming livestock into the hotel thanks to the National Western Stock Show held in Denver each winter. The 2014 NWSS Grand Champion Steer and Reserve Bull walked the red carpet and posed for photos with Denver’s cow town fans and rodeo queens alike.

photo 2The grand champion steer, Slugger, was raised by 13-year-old Baylor Bonham of Newcastle, Oklahoma. The reserve bull was raised by Lauren May of Mineral Point, Wisconsin, and was coincidentally named Denver.

True to form, the Brown Palace was jam packed with cowboys and rodeo queens sitting down to Afternoon Tea and reveling in the Western culture brought together by two of Denver’s oldest traditions.

Thanks to everyone who came out to enjoy one of the Wild West’s favorite annual events, we can’t wait to see you all again next year.

The Denver Broncos: Getting Back To Our Roots

Denver Broncos through the yearsIn 1959, Bob Howsam and Lamar Hunt met for the first time in the lobby of The Brown Palace Hotel to discuss the new football league that Hunt was forming.

It was here that Howsam agreed to own the Denver franchise in what would eventually become the American Football League. From only four franchises, the AFL grew to the point of merger with the NFL and the game football as it is known today. It was a royal beginning for the Denver Broncos!

Denver Broncos at The BrownAmong those who helped to lay the Broncos foundation include iconic ball players including Frank Bernardi, Chuck Gavin, Gene Mingo and Bob Stransky as well as assistant coach Dale Dodrill. So what does Gene Mingo remember most about his tenure with the Broncos? “The Broncos gave me my first chance,” he recalls in a past interview with The Denver Post. Mingo is responsible for the first punt return for a touchdown in the American Football League when he played for the Broncos in 1960. That same touchdown won the first-ever American Football League game, as the Broncos defeated the Boston Patriots (now the New England Patriots) 13-10.

This Sunday, January 19 at 1:00 p.m. MST, the Denver Broncos will once again face off against the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship Game at Sports Authority Field at Mile High.  Sunday’s game marks the fourth post-season match-up between New England and Denver since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970.

If Sunday’s game is the last primetime showdown between Tom Brady and Peyton Manning, it will certainly be one to remember as these football powerhouses faceoff for the right to play in Super Bowl XLVIII.

A Wild West Tradition Returns to Denver this Month

Stock Show ParadeSpotting hundreds of Texas Longhorn cattle strolling through downtown Denver on a Thursday afternoon in mid-January can only mean one thing: It’s Stock Show time. Don’t have a cow, downtown will resume its urban chic vibe by the end of the day and there will be plenty more opportunities to wrangle your wild side in the coming weeks.

The 2014 National Western Stock show is just around the corner, and The Brown Palace will once again invite the Grand Champion Steer to join us for an afternoon of local paparazzi in the Atrium Lobby.

Two of Denver’s most historic traditions will come together on Friday, January 24th from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. to showcase the 108th Annual National Western Stock Show’s Grand Champion Steer. After being led down a red carpet, the award-winning giant will be available for a complimentary close-up. This event is open to the public and does not require reservations.

The 2014 National Western Stock Show will be held January 11 – 26th with events held at the Denver Coliseum, Stadium Arena and National Western Events Center. For more information about this event, please call 303.297.3111 or email us at
